Resveratrol

ResveratrolFrom a medical school in Hungary comes a small study that suggests benefit of resveratrol in patients that have suffered a heart attack. Several beneficial effects of resveratrol (RES), a natural antioxidant present in red wine have already been described.
The aim of the study was to investigate if RES had a clinically measurable cardioprotective effect in patients after myocardial infarction. In this trial 40 post-infarction Caucasian patients were randomized into two groups. One group received a 10 mg RES capsule daily for 3 months and the other group received placebo. The results show that

resveratrol improved

left ventricle diastolic function, endothelial function, lowered LDL-cholesterol level and protected against unfavorable hematologic changes measured in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).
Resveratrol appears to have benefits in patients with congestive heart failure.

Bottom line, this antioxidant has amazing, clinically proven health benefits. I prefer supplementation with the resveratrol and methylated resveratrol combination. Wine is a source of this nutrient but alcohol is not encouraged in my practice. 1-2 glasses per week of organic red wine would be the limit I recommend. Pinot Noir likely has the highest antioxidant content of all wines.
